Fire Safety in Public Places

Last month's terrible fire that ripped through two upscale restaurants in Mumbai’s Kamala Mills has come as a shocking wake up call. Fourteen people lost their lives. Most were young people in their twenties and thirties whose bodies were found piled up in the toilet, where they retreated hoping to escape the fire. This could have been any of us, who visit restaurants, bars, clubs to enjoy a night out!!

To prevent such incidents repeating themselves, we have compiled a few useful fire safety tips to keep in mind when enjoying yourselves at a public place.

  • Know your exits. Wherever you are, you must take a moment to mentally note where the different exits are. These signs are usually lit up and easy to find. Most of the people who died in the Kamala Mills fire tragedy had trapped themselves in an un-ventilated bathroom with no escape and they suffocation to death.
  • Be aware of location of fire extinguisher and / or water hose. Observe as if your life depends on it. It does.
  • Our fire safety norms are followed rarely in public places. Therefore, avoid shows where the performers use fire as a prop.
  • Heat and therefore smoke rises, staying low, as low as you can get, helps. If there is smoke in the room it is advisable to crawl on your belly. Almost all deaths from fire arise from suffocation caused by smoke and not from the actual fire.
  • If you are trapped in a room with no exit the best thing you can do is stay low to the ground, breathe through a cloth or clothing over your mouth and nose, and make some kind of a signal to the outside (example hanging any garment, even a tablecloth out of a window). If windows are locked, break them and try to signal for help.

We urge you to take a few minutes to be aware of your surroundings and stay safe!

At GroupL Services, we provide fire safety training at our clients’ sites. Please email us on first-impressions@groupl.in to schedule a fire safety training.

Air pollution has spiked, how can GroupL Services help you

Air pollution has spiked, how can GroupL Services help you

In India, human health and safety problems caused by air pollution are becoming increasingly serious.

According to ICMR and PHFI study, air pollution led to over 2,750 cases of deaths or severe illnesses per lakh people in 2016. Leading causes of illness were non-communicable diseases like cardiovascular disease and respiratory infections.

Over the past month, North India has been covered by thick smog. There are several factors that contribute to the spike in outdoor air pollution at this time of the year.

The severely high level of outdoor air pollution combines with indoor air pollution creating a modern work hazard that deserves attention. Employees spend an average of 8 hours a day at work. Poor quality of air affects workers, causing various symptoms including allergic reactions, physical and mental fatigue, headaches, eye and throat irritation. This in turn reduces productivity and increases absenteeism at work. A recent Lancet study has said that indoor air pollution caused 1.24 lakh premature deaths in India in 2015.

Indoor air pollution is generated by poor ventilation. The use of office equipment and machines which emit pollutants like carbon monoxide that are harmful. Cleaning products using pesticides and harmful chemicals. Dust from construction. Mould and bacteria in office furnishings like blinds and carpets, ceiling panels etc.

By using a professional, well trained housekeeping and building management service provider such as GroupL Services you can combat the effects of air pollution on your employees. We can check your HVAC's and ensure they are running optimally and there is proper air circulation. Your office will be cleaned daily to remove dust, dirt, grime and prevent build up of mould and bacteria. Our team is trained to use environmentally friendly cleaning chemicals in the most efficient quantities. We use vacuums with HEPA type/media filters, which can filter the air more effectively.

What do office goers have to do with dust?

Dust is an unwanted guest. Your office isn’t an exception. You have to keep it clean and sparkling all the time. Here are some of the most important reasons that will convince you this isn’t an exaggeration:

Reason #1 – A clean office enhances your positive corporate image.
Just like your visitors judge you by your home and how clean it is, the same applies to your office. Your business partners and customers first impression about your professionalism is based on the cleanliness of the office. That’s why you can’t allow yourself a luxury of presenting your business in a bad way with an office that’s not totally clean to impress.
Rest assured that no one will say it at loud, but your customers will ask themselves a simple question. If you can’t take care of your own office, then how will you provide them with top quality business services?

Reason #2 – A clean office is closely tied to your employees’ health.
We all know that the dust is closely associated with all kinds of bacteria and allergens. Why would you risk the well-being of your employees by postponing a simple obligation to keep your office clean all the time? An unclean office can have a huge financial impact on your business. Just take into consideration all the sick leave you have to pay for. Also, you won’t be able to work at full capacity if some of your employees are always unwell.

Reason #3 – Employees are happier and more productive in a clean working environment.
It is in our nature to feel comfortable in clean and properly maintained spaces. Your employees similarly will be happier and more motivated if they work in pleasant and tidy surroundings. To keep your office clean is undoubtedly one of the most efficient ways to increase your business productivity.

How to treat minor firecracker related burns?

“The tip of a sparkler burns at a temperature of about 2,000 F, this is hot enough to cause melting of gold and third-degree burns.”

Following the safety tips we mentioned in our previous post will help you take precaution while bursting fire crackers; however accidents can occur despite all your care. Here are some things you can do if you get a minor burn from fire cracker:
-          Immediately run the burn under cold water for atleast 10 minutes. You can also place a cloth dipped in chilled water. Do not put ice or butter on the affected area as it will cause more pain, than provide relief.
-          While doing so remove any jewellery or clothing from the affected area.
-          Once cooled, cover the burnt area with a clean cloth of sterile gauge.
-          Aloe vera can be used later after the initial treatment. Aloe vera has soothing properties which reduces the chance of forming blisters.
-          If you don’t have aloe vera, you can also use raw potato or coconut oil to soothe the burn.

Safety Tips for Diwali

A little precaution could add more sparkle to your Diwali this year. We at GroupL have compiled a list of simple do’s and don’ts which will help you celebrate a safe Diwali!

Clothing
-          Wear thick, cotton clothes while bursting fire crackers. Avoid synthetic material and loose clothes as they can catch fire more easily. Be mindful of long, dangly duptta’s. When bursting fire crackers, wear closed footwear.

Candles / Diya’s
-          Keep candles / diya’s out of reach of children and pets.
-          Keep candles / diya’s out of draughts and away from curtains, other fabrics or furniture, which could catch fire.
-          Place your candles / diya’s strategically on heat resistance surfaces and blow them out before you sleep at night.

Fire – Crackers
-          Only buy fire crackers from licensed shops.
-          Store fire crackers out of reach of toddlers and away from any source of fire or ignition.
-          Burst fire crackers in open space, not in your house.
-          Keep sand, bucket of water and blankets handy incase a fire breaks out.
-          While lighting fire – crackers, keep arm’s length distance. Hold sparklers away from body. Do not bend over fire – cracker when lighting.
-          Discard used fire – works in a bucket of water.
-          Children must always be supervised when bursting fire crackers.
-          Do not burst fire – crackers while holding the cracker in your hand.
-          Do not keep fire – works in your pocket.
