Best wishes on the occasion of Dussehra
Dussehra, also known as Dasara, Vijayadashami,
Durgotsav or the tenth day of Navratri, is an important Hindu festival
celebrated across India. It is calculated on the basis of tenth day of Hindu
lunar calendar month of Ashvin and usually falls in September or October each
year.
The history of Dussehra celebrations
is as old as one can think of and is believed to have its origin in several
legends. The two stories most commonly associated with Dussehra are mentioned
here. According to Hindu
mythology, Ravan, the demon King abducted King Rama’s wife Sita to his kingdom
of Lanka. Rama, his brother Lakshmana,
their follower Hanuman and an army of monkeys fought a great
battle to rescue Sita. It is believed that it was on the tenth day of the
battle that Lord Rama killed Ravana by cutting his ten heads, to rescue his
beloved wife Sita. Furthermore, Dussehra Puja is also celebrated to mark
Goddess Durga’s victory over the Mahishasura demons. Thus it is a festival
celebrated to commemorate the triumph of good over evil. Bengalis celebrate
Dusshera as a part of their main festival - Durga Puja. This day marks the end
of Durga Puja celebrations, the preceding nine days being collectively referred
to as 'Navratri'.
On the
occasion of Dussehra, celebrate the victory of good over evil. Wishing you and
your family a blessed and joyous Dussehra!
The story behind Ganesh Chaturthi
Ganesh Chaturthi or Vinayak Chaturthi is one of the major
traditional festivals celebrated by the Hindu community. The festival marks
the birthday of Lord Ganesha; the Lord of knowledge, wisdom, prosperity and good
fortune. It is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhadrapada. The
festival lasts for 10 days, ending on Ananta Chaturdashi.
There are many stories associated with the birth of Lord
Ganesha, one of the most relevant ones is shared here. According to Hindu
mythology, Lord Ganesha is the son of Shiva (The God of Destruction in the
Hindu Holy Trinity of Creator-Preserver-Destroyer) and Parvati (Shiva’s
consort). One day, as Parvati was alone at home, she felt the need for
someone to guard the door to her house while she took a bath. Parvati created
Ganesha out of sandalwood paste that she used for her bath and breathed life
into the figure. She then set him the task of guarding her door while she
bathed. Lord Shiva returned while Parvati was bathing, but was abruptly
stopped by the man-god Parvati had posted at the door. Outraged by the cheek
of this stranger, Shiva cut off his head only to discover later that he had
killed Parvati’s son! When Parvati learned of this, she was so enraged and
insulted that she decided she was going to destroy the entire world. This
worried everyone and they requested Lord Shiva to find a solution to calm her
rage. Shiva then ordered all his followers (ganas) to immediately go and find
a child whose mother had her back towards her child in negligence and bring
his head. The first child seen by the followers was that of an elephant and
they, as ordered, cut his head and brought it to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva
immediately placed the head on Ganesha`s body and brought it to life again.
He declared Ganesha to be his own son as well, and gave him the status of
being foremost among the gods, and leader of all the ganas (classes of
beings), Ganapati.
It is not known when and how Ganesh Chaturthi was first
celebrated. But according to historians, the earliest Ganesh Chaturthi
celebrations can be traced back to the times of the reigns of dynasties of
Satavahana, Rashtrakuta and Chalukya. Historical records reveal that Ganesh
Chaturthi celebrations were initiated in Maharashtra by Chatrapati Shivaji
Maharaja, the great Maratha ruler, to promote culture and nationalism. It has
continued ever since. Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with great pomp and fair
in states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
On the occassion of Ganesh Chaturthi, may the Lord fill your
life with prosperity and success. Happy Ganesh Chaturthi!

The Dirty Truth About Public Bathrooms
How clean are your public bathrooms? Do they just LOOK clean? Or are they really clean—deep down? And does your staff really know how to handle the need to get rid of the down and dirty? According to a recent survey, many public toilets are not as clean as they should be.
Restroom maintenance is an important daily task with which most facility management professionals are familiar, since restrooms are a frequently used area in any facility and their upkeep can affect public perceptions. But in the survey, conducted by ISSA and Clorox Professional Products Co., it’s difficult for some managers to uncover what it takes to keep this critical area in top shape.

Facility Contingency Plans For Terrorist Attacks
Recently, leading security expert Chris Phillips, founder and managing director of the UK-based firm International Protect and Prepare Security Office (IPPSO), said that the attack on the Lindt café in Sydney, Australia highlights the need for all crowded places to have a contingency plan for implementation in the event of a terrorist attack.
Speaking on behalf of Counter Terror Expo, an conference and expo to be held April 21-22, 2015 in London, Phillips said, “We have to face the reality that locations such as primary schools, shopping malls, and leisure centers are all potential targets for terrorist attack today. They should all develop and rehearse an emergency response plan just as they do with fire drills.”
With the assaults occurring in France this week—the terror attack on the offices of Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris, followed by the related hostage situations at a printing plant in Dammartin-en-Goele and a supermarket in eastern Paris, Phillips’ list of recommendations are brought to the fore of many facility professionals’ minds. (News outlets are currently reporting all terrorists have been killed.) While the Charlie Hebdo offices and the printing plant are not public, crowded facilities, managers in all settings can benefit from these tips.

Tips to Improve Efficiency and Save Money in a Hotel's Housekeeping Department
Housekeeping is not only the largest department in terms of number
of employees, it is also the department responsible for continuously
maintaining the largest amount of physical space in the hotel. Since
housekeeping as a department is not responsible for generating any revenue, every
housekeeping manager should always make controlling their department’s expenses
a top priority.
Here are some tips from Gilles Arditi, President of Southwind
Hospitality, to make a substantial positive impact on your housekeeping
practices – to help you create a checklist to reduce costs and increase
efficiency, and perhaps even turn around an entire department.

Organizing Housekeeping to Improve Workflow
Every housekeeping department deals with cleanliness and all
ancillary service attached to that. For hotels, the standard of housekeeping
plays an important role in determining its standard. With accommodation being
the highest revenue generating department there, it is natural for housekeeping
to be the largest department.
Good organization is the greatest requirement for effective
housekeeping services, said Shane Nicolopolous, director of rooms for the Hyatt
Regency Scottsdale. See how organizing the housekeeping improves the workflow

The Role of a Manager in Housekeeping in the Hotel Industry
Housekeeping management is at the core
of hotel operations and can make the difference between a reputed hotel and one
that guests are unlikely to visit again. The primary housekeeping duty is to
ensure the cleanliness and orderliness of hotel rooms and to ascertain that
they are properly stocked with the supplies to which guests are entitled. A
hotel housekeeping manager not only supervises housekeepers in conducting their
duties but also investigates any complaints guests make and takes corrective
action.

Hospitality services sector has traditionally been more of a
person to person connection. Perhaps it is the only sector which keeps the
traditional values alive along with the turn-down services with the very
reasonable facts that they can be used to enhance service and communication
